Canadian Maritime Provinces

September-October 2025

We spent a month traveling around this remarkable area full of history, welcoming people, gardens, and water everywhere—bays, rivers, lakes, and the ocean.

After flying into Boston, we rented a car and drove to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and then returned to Boston.

As we traveled around, we were struck by the strong cultural identity in each village. The Maritime provinces reflect a diverse range of cultural influences, including those of Indigenous peoples (Mi'kmaq, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy), the French (Acadians), and the Celtic (Scottish, Irish, and English). During the American Revolution, British loyalists (including free Black Loyalists) from the colonies also fled to the region. The Black Loyalist Heritage Center in Nova Scotia is a fascinating museum and well worth a visit.
